Consuming the right nutrients when healing from a wound is critical to the recovery process. Without a proper diet, you body takes more time to heal, which can potential lead to complications like infection. Here is a list of five essential nutrients that aid in the repairing process.





A high protein diet is needed during wound recovery because 100 mg of protein are lost daily to exudation or leakage. Protein repairs damaged tissue, but when the body doesn’t receive enough, it has a hard time forming collagen. Increase protein intake by choose lean meats, like seafood and poultry, and sticking to whole grain breads and pastas. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends women consume five ounces of protein a day and men consume six ounces a day.



Zinc is an essential trace mineral for DNA synthesis, cell division, collagen formation, protein synthesis, and immune function. These are all important processes for wound repair and tissue regeneration. Zinc also activates T-lymphocytes, which are essential to the immune system. Zinc can be found in many foods that are protein rich such as red meat, dairy, and whole grains. The recommended daily dose for males is 11 milligrams and 8 milligrams for females.

Foods rich in vitamin A include dark greens and carrots, and food rich in vitamin C include citrus fruits, dark greens, and potatoes.



When recovering from a wound, carbohydrates, specifically glucose, are crucial. Glucose provides energy to white blood cells, stimulates collagen production, and promotes fibroblast growth. A deficiency in carbohydrates leads to an increase of pressure ulcers, increased mortality rate, and reduced muscle mass. Too many carbohydrates increases the risk of obesity, which can impair wound healing. Aim to consume a moderate amount of complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables, and fruits.
